World Leaders, Veterans Remember D-Day
ResumeNineteen world leaders and more than 1,000 veterans are commemorating the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the day Allied troops landed in Normandy, France.
It was the largest amphibious invasion in history and a turning point that led to the German defeat in World War II.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and a few German veterans attended the ceremony as a gesture of European unity. And at the sidelines of a private lunch for world leaders, President Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke informally for 10 to 15 minutes, in their first face-to-face meeting since Russia invaded Crimea in a dispute over Ukraine's tilt towards Europe.
NPR's Eleanor Beardsley joins Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson from the ceremonies in Normandy.
