Some of the 300 military advisers tasked by President Obama with training the Iraqi military are now on their way to Iraq.

Today's Washington Post reports that they will start with small teams that will analyze the capabilities of the Iraqi army, which has largely collapsed in large areas of the country now in the hands of the militant group the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Here & Now's Robin Young talks with Dr. Rick Brennan, a former career Army officer and senior political scientist at The RAND Corporation, who was part of the team assessing and reporting the Iraqi army while U.S. combat troops were based there. He said his team was well aware of the Iraqi military's shortcomings, which included a lack of funding.
