Mississippi's Only Clinic Where Abortions Are Performed Stays Open, For Now

Women seeking abortions in Mississippi will still be able to go to the Jackson Women's Health Organization, after a federal appeals court yesterday blocked implementation of a 2012 state law requiring that doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at local hospitals. The hospitals have refused to grant that privilege.

The state of Mississippi may appeal. It is one of 11 states that have passed admitting privileges laws that activists acknowledge have been more effective in reducing access to abortions than so-called "personhood" laws that define when life begins.
