With the last of the results from yesterday's historic vote for Scottish independence trickling in, it is safe to say Scotland will remain part of the United Kingdom.

55 percent of Scottish voters voted "no" on independence, with 45 percent voting yes.

After the results came out, British Prime Minister David Cameron said, "The people of Scotland have spoken and it is a clear result."

Meantime, pro-independence leader Alex Salmond announced his resignation today as Scotland's first minister and the leader of the Scottish National Party. He will step down in November.

Here & Now's Robin Young speaks with NPR's London correspondent Ari Shapiro on the effects of the “no” vote in Scotland and worldwide.
