In Milwaukee, residents are calling for criminal charges against a police officer who fatally shot an unarmed mentally ill man.

In April, Dontre Hamilton, a homeless man, was sleeping when Milwaukee Police Officer Christopher Manney started to pat him down. Hamilton woke, grabbed the officer’s baton and began hitting him. Officer Manney responded, shooting Hamilton 14 times.

Months later, the family and supporters of Hamilton are asking why the county district attorney has not yet made a decision on whether or not to charge the officer.

Milwaukee Alderman Joe Davis, Sr. wrote a letter to the D.A. and spoke with Here & Now yesterday, demanding immediate action.

Now talking with host Robin Young is Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm who responds to the criticism and discussed his timeline for a decision.
