The storied New York City Ballet is getting a new music director, and it's a choice that's catching attention. The ballet's artistic director Peter Martins has chosen a world-renowned orchestra leader who doesn't have much experience conducting for dancers.

Andrew Litton conducts orchestras around the world and told Here & Now's Robin Young that his very first professional gig was playing piano onstage for the legendary Rudolf Nureyev on Broadway.

Litton says he's looking forward to his new job because the NYCB has always championed great orchestral music, as well as classic ballet music, in its repertory.
