Thousands of people are expected to start long-distance treks on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the other jewels of American hiking this year. That's inspired in part by the recent Oscar-nominated movie adaptation of a trail memoir called "Wild."

The traditional hiking season has hardly begun, but two long-distance hikers have already made history this month. From the Here & Now Contributors Network, Tom Banse of Northwest News Network reports on what is believed to be the first-ever winter traverse of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Shawn Forry and Justin Lichter arrived safe and sound at the Mexican border on Sunday, four-and-a-half months after beginning their trek in the North Cascades.
