Burning land and roaming gangs of lumber thieves aren't the typical images called to mind by the Amazon rainforest, but they are the reality. Enforcement authorities are understaffed, as the Brazilian economy is in shambles.

Deforestation affects people in the country in a multitude of ways. NPR's Lourdes Garcia-Navarro spent two weeks traveling to explore the issue. She talks with Here & Now's Peter O'Dowd about what she found.
