Toy fads come and go. That’s what a fad is, after all. The chemistry set has ridden the ups and downs of America’s scientific achievements for more than a century.

It’s inspired Nobel Prize winners, started a few fires and, in the last 50 years, largely faded from popularity. But don’t count it out.
