The worst refugee crisis to hit Europe since World War II has strained countries across Europe, even countries such as Germany, which originally welcomed people fleeing conflict in the Middle East and Africa.

NPR's Joanna Kakissis and the BBC's Nick Thorpe, who have both covered the crisis this year, check in with Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson from Athens and Budapest, respectively.
