Maria Schneider's Minnesota Roots Lead To Another Grammy Nomination

The 58th Grammy Awards will be held next month. Among the nominees is Minnesota composer and conductor Maria Schneider. Her album with her ensemble the Maria Schneider Orchestra, "The Thompson Fields," picked up a nomination for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.

Schneider has won the award before. "Winter Morning Walks," her 2013 collaboration with soprano Dawn Upshaw, won three Grammys, including Best Contemporary Classical Composition.

"The Thompson Fields" finds particular inspiration in Maria Schneider's Minnesota roots, in particular her hometown of Windom. As Maria told Here & Now's Robin Young in July 2015, though critics - and her members of her own orchestra - might find the landscape unspectacular and bleak, for her, "the sound of my music is what it is, largely because of the natural landscape that I grew up with and people that made me appreciate it so much."
