At least 31 people died as a result of the snowstorm on the East Coast this past weekend. U.S. Capitol Police officer Vernon Alston, 44, was one of them. He died shoveling snow on Saturday. Alston was a fixture on Capitol Hill, having served on the force for nearly 20 years.

Other deaths included people who died in car crashes, or from carbon monoxide poisoning because their tailpipe was blocked by snow.

Dr. Lawrence Phillips of NYU Langone Medical Center talks with Here & Now's Robin Young about the biggest dangers that come with snowstorms, and how to avoid them.
