British Prime Minister Theresa May Unexpectedly Calls For Election

British Prime Minster Theresa May surprised the United Kingdom on Tuesday with an announcement that she’s calling for an early general election — in only six weeks.

May is seeking a stronger mandate for Britain’s exit from the European Union. Her Conservative Party currently holds only a small majority in the House of Commons and May hopes that increasing that majority will give her more freedom to pursue Brexit on her own terms.

The BBC's Rob Watson (@robwatsonbbc) discusses the election's implications with Here & Now's Meghna Chakrabarti.
