"Star Trek: Discovery," the latest iteration of the epic sci-fi franchise, goes boldly where the past six series haven't by placing a black woman at the center of the action. But on a show where many characters aren't even human, does diversity still matter?

NPR TV critic Eric Deggans (@Deggans) gives Here & Now's Meghna Chakrabarti his take, plus a look ahead at the new season of "Stranger Things."

This segment aired on October 27, 2017.
