Fatoumata Camara, a black Muslim woman, investigated her own hate crime after she says the New York Police Department and the Bronx district attorney's office dismissed her case. Here & Now's Robin Young speaks with Camara.

Here & Now received this statement from the NYPD:

"The NYPD takes hate crime very seriously, and there is no place for hate or intolerance in New York City, or anywhere. This investigation is ongoing. The case has been investigated as a robbery based on the evidence initially available. As a result of new information, which detectives were not aware of previously, investigators are now conferring with the NYPD hate crime task force. The NYPD encourages anyone who feels they are a victim of a bias crime to report the incident to police immediately."

And this one from the Bronx district attorney's office:

"We are working with the NYPD. We look forward to speaking with any witnesses to the assault or anyone with information that could be helpful to the investigation."

This segment aired on June 24, 2019.
