Major League Baseball is taking the initial steps toward the start of a truncated season shadowed by the coronavirus. Players are being tested before being cleared for training that is supposed to start on Friday.

Opening Day will be later this month, but some players are opting out. Colorado Rockies outfielder Ian Desmond took to social media this week to say he won't play, due to concerns about the virus and racial injustice.

Host Peter O'Dowd talks to Here & Now sports analyst Mike Pesca, who hosts the daily podcast The Gist, about the current state of sports.

This segment aired on July 2, 2020.
