Climate disasters force Princeville, NC, residents to relocate to higher ground

05:45

Princeville, North Carolina, is America’s oldest community founded by formerly enslaved people. The historic town has been devastated by countless floods and other climate-fueled disasters since it was created. Now, the residents have decided to relocate the town to higher ground in a plan funded by FEMA.

We speak to Grist's Jake Bittle on how the town will give up its historic territory and move to safer land — but only after decades of delay and disintegration.

This segment aired on July 10, 2024.
