In all of U.S. history, there has been only one foreign-born first lady.

Louisa Adams, the wife of the sixth president of the U.S., John Quincy Adams, was born in England. The story of how this woman was challenged by her upbringing but grew to effectively support the diplomatic and political work of her husband is the subject of a new biography, titled "Louisa: The Extraordinary Life of Mrs. Adams." Author Louisa Thomas joined WBUR's Morning Edition to discuss the book.

This segment aired on April 13, 2016.
