The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach hits the pavement Friday for the 42nd year in Long Beach, California.

As Boston plans and prepares for its first grand prix in the fall, we turn to this other coastal city for a look at their decades-long race.

Columnist Tim Grobaty, of the Long Beach Press-Telegram, is a lifelong resident of the city and has written about the race for most of its history. He says the race wasn't completely welcome when it first got started.

Grobaty joined WBUR's Morning Edition to discuss the history of the race in his hometown.

This segment aired on April 15, 2016.
