Portrait of a Kwaito Artist

This week, Sean Cle of WBUR's Inside Out Documentaries has been reporting on a genre of South African urban music called Kwaito. It was born out of the death of apartheid and has since come to define the generation that came of age after the struggle.

In Thursday's installment of our series, Sean traveled to Zol, a rough-and-tumble area of the Soweto township that's given rise to more than a half dozen Kwaito performers.

Sean Cole tells the story of one of those artists, a man who's so proud of having grown up in Zol that he calls himself "Zola."

This program aired on July 29, 2005. The audio for this program is not available.
