O'Malley Elevated To Cardinal

The piazza in front of Saint Peter's Square in Vatican City is crowded with the faithful today. Catholics and others have gathered to watch Pope Benedict the 16th preside over the first consistory of his rule. In an elaborate ceremony, Sean O'Malley — the influential archbishop of Boston — has donned a red hat to become one of 15 new cardinals today.

Michael Paulson covers religion for the Boston Globe and is in the Vatican City. He joined us from a rooftop looking down at the piazza.

This program aired on March 24, 2006. The audio for this program is not available.
