Hand of God at Film Festival

The film "Hand of God" is being screened this weekend at the Boston International Film Festival.

The film, by Salem native Joe Cultrera, tells the story of his brother Paul who was sexually abused by father Joseph Birmingham, then a priest at Saint James Church in Salem.

The film recounts Paul's struggle with the secret and he and his family's search for meaning in the ordeal. Paul now lives in California and Joe in New York, but the two are in Boston for this weekend's screenings.

So on Thursday, Delores Handy-Brown climbed the stairs of their house on Prescott Street, built by their grandfather, to talk to Paul and Joe about the film, and ask Paul if being back in Salem brought back memories of a painful childhood.

This program aired on June 9, 2006. The audio for this program is not available.
