Gay Marriage Ban Advances

State lawmakers have taken the first step towards letting voters decide if Massachusetts will continue to let gays and lesbians legally wed.

In what was a confusing and surprising day on Beacon Hill yesterday, many legislators wondered what would happen next. In the end, they gave initial approval to a proposed ballot question that would define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. WBUR's Martha Bebinger has more on the story.
