Meehan is UMass Pick

Representative Marty Meehan says that if the UMass Board of Trustees approve him to be chancellor of the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, he will step down from Congress in July.

University Trustees are scheduled to vote on Meehan's selection Wednesday, President Jack Wilson will introduce the new chancellor to faculty, staff and students shortly after.

Several people from both sides of the political isle have said they plan on running for Meehan's fifth district seat, which represents areas from Haverhill in the Northeast across Middlesex County to Southwest communities Bolton and Berlin.

Governor Deval Patrick will have 160 days to call a special election after Meehan steps down.
