In the not-too-distant future, a visit to your doctor might involve not just the usual weight and blood pressure checks but also a look at your genes. The idea that genetic testing can help make treatment safer and more effective is part of a new approach called personalized medicine.

It's already arriving in hospitals and clinics but there are some hurdles holding it back from becoming commonplace. Here's WBUR's Health and Science reporter Allan Coukell with more on the story.
