Battle Over "America's Birthplace"

As Americans look forward to celebrating July 4th tomorrow...we pause to ponder the significance of the holiday...and ask, "Where is the birthplace of independence?"

Two cities often lay claim to that title: Boston and Philadelphia. On the one hand, Boston is home to Paul Revere, the Minutemen, and a certain tea party, for instance. On the other hand, Philadelphia boasts Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the first flag.

So on the eve of Independence Day, we're putting the question to two reporters, one in each city. Hillary Frank represents Philadelphia and WBUR's Sean Cole speaks for Boston.

This program aired on July 3, 2007. The audio for this program is not available.
