Punishment for the Patriots

Punishment for the Patriots: the National Football League has delivered fines and a draft pick penalty to the team from New England.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is taking a big hit: the league's maximum fine of 500,000 dollars. The team must pay 250,000 and give up its first-round draft choice if it reaches the playoffs, or second and third picks if it doesn't.

The NFL's ruling is over an incident on Sunday, when league officials confiscated a camera from a Patriots assistant who was on the New York Jets' sideline taping their defensive signals during their game against the Patriots. The Patriots won that game 38 to 14; That win still stands.

Mike Reiss covers the Patriots for the Boston Globe. He joins WBUR's Delores Handy to analyze the NFL ruling and its ramifications today.
