Firefighters Reflect on the Job

Should the proposed random drug and alcohol testing of Boston firefighters be part of contract talks?

Union leaders say it's a labor issue that should be negotiated; Mayor Tom Menino says it's a public safety issue that should be mandated, after two firefighters died on the job in West Roxbury last year.

During his "State of the City Address" on Tuesday, the Mayor took his strongest position yet, saying any new contract must include testing.

WBUR's David Boeri recently sat down with two retired Boston firefighters to talk about the controversy, and about life in the fire house.

Later today, David Boeri and the Radio Boston team will have more on the debate over random drug and alcohol testing of Boston firefighters. Tune in to Radio Boston this afternoon at one o'clock on WBUR.

This program aired on January 18, 2008. The audio for this program is not available.
