Local Reaction to Calif. Gay Marriage Decision

People on both sides of the same-sex marriage debate in Massachusetts vow to get involved in the gay marriage fight in California after that state's top court yesterday legalized gay marriage.

Leigh Swislow of the Boston-based group Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders says she hopes the decision will encourage other states to follow suit.

"We have been waiting for another state to join Massachusetts in recognizing marriage equality for its same sex citizens," Swislow says. "It's great that California has made this decision."

Gay marriage critic Kris Mineau of the Massachusetts Family Institute called the California decision an "assault on democracy," and said he'll back a November ballot question in California seeking a constitutional ban on gay marriage.
