Police say 53-year-old Carlene Balderrama shot herself after sending a fax to her mortgage company saying she'd be dead by the time her house went to auction.
The company called Taunton police, but by the time they reached her, Balderrama had already died.
Her foreclosed home was scheduled to go to auction 90 minutes later.
The letter she faxed to her mortgage company said her family would use the insurance to pay off the mortgage.
Insurance companies typically pay out death benefits if the policyholder commits suicide after paying into the policy for several years.
