Giambi comes off bench, saves Yanks against Boston

Jason Giambi saved the New York Yankees in a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox last night.

Coming off the bench, Giambi hit a tying homer off Hideki Okajima in the seventh and a game-winning single in the ninth off Jonathan Papelbon.

New York is desperate to get back in the playoff race. The Yankees salvaged the finale of a three-game series and won Boston's final regular-season game at Yankee Stadium.

Boston's Jon Lester was working on a four-hit shutout when Cody Ransom doubled with two outs in the seventh, chasing the lefty.

Lester and New York's Mike Mussina matched zeros until the fifth, when Boston rookie Jed Lowrie singled with one out and Alex Cora was hit by a pitch. Jason Varitek followed with an RBI single and speedy Jacoby Ellsbury beat out a potential double-play ball to make it 2-0.

Mariano Rivera entered a tie game in the eighth and pitched one-and-a-third hitless innings for the win.
