Central Figure in Mob Drama on Trial This Week
This week, a jury in Miami has been learning about five decades worth of the history of organized crime in Boston.
They're hearing about "Whitey" Bulger, the Irish Godfather, and they're learning about the FBI's war on crime that targeted the Italian Mob known as the Mafia. At the center of it all is the Boston office of the FBI and what's been called one of the worst scandals in the annals of law enforcement.
But it's not the Bureau that'son trial; it's retired FBI agent John Connolly, who developed Whitey Bulger as a top secret informant and then, prosecutors say, who became one of Bulger's mobsters. This week Connolly has been on trial for murder in the first degree.
