BSO Celebrates 100th Birthday Of Music Icon

The Boston Symphony Orchestra is celebrating the 100th birthday of a contemporary music icon.

WBUR's Andrea Shea has more.

For more than half a century Elliot Carter has broken musical conventions with his complex, atonal works.

Carter will be on hand as fans gather today at Symphony Hall for the world premiere of 'Intervensions,' a new Carter piece for Piano and Orchestra.

This makes Carter the oldest living composer to introduce a significant piece at such a significant age.

CARTER: I forget that I'm 100 I don't really think about it much. I'm thinking about notes.Time:05]

Carter's notes will be played by the BSO today, tonight and tomorrow, topping off a weeklong celebration at venues around Boston.

Next week the party moves to Carnegie Hall in New York.

Elliot Carter turns 100 on December 11th.

This program aired on December 5, 2008. The audio for this program is not available.
