116,000 Mass. Residents Still Without Power

More than 2,000 Massachusetts residents sought shelter this weekend at schools and community centers as utility crews scramble to restore electricity to homes in the Merrimack valley after last week's ice storm.

WBUR's Bianca Vazquez Toness has more.

Many people came to the shelter over the weekend after spending a night or two in their cold dark homes. Fitchburg resident Teresa Ashby stayed in her apartment with her five children.

ASHBY: We all basically got in one bed, lots of covers, and used body heat. but it got too cold. I was like, no, we got to go to the shelter.

Officials in Fitchburg hope to have power restored to the rest of the city by the middle of this week. School is canceled today and tomorrow.
