Key Averages Finish Higher

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks managed to climb off their worst levels of the day, with the key averages finishing in positive territory.

After six straight session declines, the Dow rose 12 points to 8,212.

The S&P 500 gained 1 point to 843.

And the Nasdaq composite index finished with a gain of 22 points to 1,511.

On the broader market, advancing issues topped decliners by an 8 to 7 margin on the New York Stock Exchange.

Volume on the NYSE came to 6.7 billion shares. Some 2.5 billion shares were traded on the Nasdaq stock market.
