Rep. Tierney Says He Won't Run For Kennedy's Seat

Rep. John Tierney says he has decided against mounting a campaign to seek the late Sen. Edward Kennedy's vacant Senate seat.

The Salem Democrat said in a statement Monday he "can best be of service in the U.S. House of Representatives."

Attorney General Martha Coakley was the first Democrat to declare candidacy for the seat. U.S. Reps. Stephen Lynch and Michael Capuano have taken out nomination papers, while Rep. Edward Markey has ruled out a campaign. State Sen. Scott Brown is running for the Republican nomination.

Edward Kennedy died Aug. 25 of brain cancer. The primary in the race is Dec. 8. The special election is Jan. 19.
