Small Plane Goes Down In Cape Cod Waters

Two people aboard a small plane have escaped serious injury after the aircraft splashed down in the waters just off Cape Cod.

The Coast Guard and the Federal Aviation Administration say the single-engine Cessna crashed shortly before noon on Monday about 100 yards from South Cape Beach in Mashpee.

The pilot, who sustained minor injuries, and a passenger were able to make it to shore with the help of lifeguards from the beach.

The pilot, Michael Keeling, said he decided to put the plane down in the water after experiencing engine problems.

The plane had taken off earlier from an airport in Falmouth.

The 35-year-old Cessna 177B was registered to Rocky Wings, Inc. of Canton.

Federal officials will investigate the accident.
