National Post For Mass. Public Health Chief

John Auerbach, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health commissioner, has been elected to head the national association of state public health officials. This from the governor's office:

BOSTON - The Patrick-Murray Administration today announced that Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health John Auerbach has been elected President of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO). ASTHO is the national nonprofit organization representing public health agencies of the United States, the U.S. Territories and the District of Columbia, as well as the 120,000 public health professionals these agencies employ. The organization and its members are dedicated to developing and influencing sound public health policy and to assuring excellence in state-based public health practice.

And this:

In assuming his new role as President of ASTHO, Commissioner Auerbach stressed his commitment to eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities, an issue he has focused on in Massachusetts that will also be a priority during his ASTHO presidency.

Prior to his appointment as Commissioner, Auerbach served as the Executive Director of the Boston Public Health Commission for nine years and had previously worked at the state's Department of Public Health for a decade, first as the Chief of Staff and later as an Assistant Commissioner overseeing the HIV/AIDS Bureau. He began his career in public health as an administrator in the Uphams Corner Community Health Center after which he became a manager at Boston City Hospital and the Boston University School of Medicine. Commissioner Auerbach received his BA from Clark University and his MBA with a concentration in health care administration from Boston University's School of Management.
