U.S. Army Dept. Probes Death Of Fall River Guardsman

The U.S. Department of the Army is investigating the death of a Massachusetts National Guard soldier from Fall River who died in Afghanistan.

Maj. Lisa Ahaesy said Pvt. Ethan Goncalo died Saturday in the Afghan capital of Kabul from an incident not related to combat. She did not provide additional details.

The Department of the Army is investigating the death since Goncalo had been activated into the regular army at the time of his death.

The 21-year-old was a member of the 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry Regiment in Worcester.

He was a 2008 graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School.

Goncalo is the fourth member of the military from Fall River to die in service in the past year, and the third soldier from Massachusetts to die in Afghanistan in the past two weeks.
