More Roofs Collapse Across Mass.

There were several more roof collapses in Massachusetts Monday. That's after more than 100 roofs across the state gave out in the last week, mainly on commercial buildings.

About 100 developmentally disabled people were safely evacuated from an employment center in Norwood before the roof gave way there.

Dan Burke, president of the nonprofit Lifeworks Incorporated, says his staff knew just what to do when they heard loud noises coming from above.

"Our operations manager was in the warehouse section of our building and heard two very loud noises," Burke said. "He knew immediately that there was a problem. He called for an immediate evacuation of the building by our program."

Burke says the staff — and the disabled people training and working there — practice evacuations once a month.

"We evacuated people who are both physically challenged as well as developmentally challenged," Burke said. "And we're fortunate our staff did a wonderful job, and they did a wonderful job, I want to say, the people we support."

Burke says about a third of the building collapsed.
