Probe Begins For Mass. Chemical Plant Blast

A team of fire and public safety investigators is trying to figure what caused a large explosion at a chemical plant in Middleton.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan says investigators from his office, other state agencies, local authorities and federal agencies will look into the Sunday night blast and fire at the Bostik Inc. complex. The plant makes adhesives and sealants.

Public health officials have concluded there's no threat from released chemicals to residents who live near the plant.

But neighbors such as Christine Deao say the explosion Sunday night was a scary experience.

"Everybody in the house panicked," she said. "We all ran to the front of the house. Then we ran outside. Everyone was like, 'What happened? What happened?' "

Injuries to the four workers are not considered life threatening.
