Colorado Tunnel Also Had Problems With Big Dig Light Manufacturer

This article is more than 12 years old.

The Big Dig tunnels are not the only ones to have had problems with lights made by the lighting manufacturer NuArt. The Colorado Department of Transportation said last year it also had to replace defective lights.

The Eisenhower Tunnel takes I-70 under the Rocky Mountains. NuArt, the same manufacturer that provided the lights for the Big Dig, also supplied the lights for the Colorado tunnel.

A spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation said the tunnel supervisor is a little bit disappointed with the quality of the lights, because they have had to spend much more on maintenance than anticipated. Colorado officials thought the lights would last 30 years, but last summer, after only six years, they had to replace cracked acrylic lenses and broken latches.
