Replacements For Levine’s Tanglewood Performances Announced

James Levine was scheduled to lead five of 21 programs this summer at Tanglewood. Thursday, the Boston Symphony Orchestra announced the names of the conductors that will replace him at the podium.

Levine's ongoing back condition forced him to bow out of performances during the last months of his tenure as music director. His resignation becomes official in September.

Here's the lineup:

The Opening Night Gala Concert on July 8 will be lead by Charles Dutoit. He’ll conduct an all-Italian program featuring Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Respighi.

The following night, Dutoit will return to the podium for a performance of Belioz’s "Requiem."

Finnish conductor Jon Storgaards will make his BSO debut on July 16 for an all-Sibelius program. Storgaards is the chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.

A few weeks later, on July 24, French conductor Emmanuel Krivine heads up an all-Ravel program that includes the "Concerto for the Left Hand 24."

Then comes Mahler’s "Symphony No. 5" — one of James Levine's specialties. Hans Graf, Houston Symphony music director, will conduct instead. He’ll also lead Mozart’s "Piano Concerto No. 12 in A" with Leon Fleisher, on July 29.

Also, Spanish maestro Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos will add one more Tanglewood concert to his schedule. In addition to conducting the BSO on both August 5 and 12 as previously planned, he’ll also take the stage for the Tanglewood Gala on August 2.

This program aired on May 26, 2011. The audio for this program is not available.
