Mass. Launches Appliance Rebate Program

Massachusetts is offering rebates of up to $200 for residents who buy new energy-efficient refrigerators and air conditioners.

The program that starts for purchases made on or after July 28 will offer rebates of $150 for energy star refrigerators and $50 for air conditioners that will replace old models.

The program is part of the Patrick administration's commitment to energy efficiency.

The program is funded by a combination of federal grants and is expected to save consumers $2 million combined, while saving about 1.8 million kilowatt hours of power for a year.

Mark Sylvia, commissioner of the state Department of Energy Resources, says consumers will save money on the initial purchase and through lower utility bills.

This program aired on June 8, 2011. The audio for this program is not available.
