MBTA Hikes Parking Fines From $1 To $21

The MBTA is boosting fines for commuters who don't pay the $4 fee to park at agency-owned honor lots from $1 to $21 in an effort to crack down on scofflaws.

The T says in a statement that the current fines are not a deterrent and too many people are simply ignoring them and not paying.

The lots rely on honor boxes, where commuters can slip their money into a secure box.

The new fines take effect July 1. The Registry of Motor Vehicles will be notified of unpaid fees and won't renew licenses or registrations until the fine is paid.

The MBTA is also testing a premium parking program at the Braintree Station lot, where commuters can pay a $200 monthly fee form conveniently located parking spots.

This program aired on June 14, 2011. The audio for this program is not available.
