Groton Marine Is Laid To Rest

A Marine from Groton who was killed in Afghanistan was buried Thursday in Westford.

Twenty-three-year-old Cpl. William Woitowicz was posthumously promoted to sergeant and received a Purple Heart.

Woitowicz went straight from high school in Groton to the Marine Corps. According to friends of the family, his parents tried to talk him out of it, to no avail. When he got orders to go to Afghanistan, it wasn't soon enough, says family friend Joe Moore.

"He went early," Moore said, "ahead of his team. That was Bill. He loved it. There wasn't a doubt in his mind that he was going to go to Afghanistan."

Woitowicz died last week in combat.
