The White House is moving one step closer to ending the war in Afghanistan.

On Wednesday, President Obama is expected to unveil plans to bring thousands of troops home, beginning next month. The president will also provide a blueprint aimed at giving Afghans control of their own security starting in 2014.

For some insight on the drawdown, WBUR's Morning Edition spoke with Vali Nasr, a professor of international politics at Tufts University's Fletcher School. Nasr also served as senior adviser to the late Richard Holbrooke, who served as the U.S.' special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

This program aired on June 21, 2011.
