Mass. Soldier Killed In Iraq

A soldier from Cape Cod has died in Iraq. The Pentagon says Spc. Matthew Gallagher died Sunday in Wasit province from injuries suffered in what the military described as a non-combat related incident. A statement said the circumstances of the incident were under investigation.

In an interview with the Cape Cod Times, Gallagher's mother, Cheryl Ruggerio, said she was told by Army officials that her son was killed when shots were fired during a sweep of some homes.

The soldier's wife, Katie Gallagher, said her husband was planning to return home on a two-week leave next month.

Gallagher, who was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas, was on his second tour of duty.

His father, Peter Gallagher, was a retired Quincy police officer.
