Mass. Tornado Claims Rise To $175 Million

State insurance officials are nearing a final tally for damage caused by this month's tornadoes in central and western Massachusetts.

Numbers released Wednesday show nearly 10,000 insurance claims have been filed, with damage totaling about $175 million.

State Insurance Commissioner Joseph Murphy says he doesn't expect that number to grow much more.

"We're seeing those claims sort of level off," Murphy said. "For the most part all the claims have been made and reported to the companies. There may be some slight increase as we move forward in that total dollar amount as claims are adjusted.

"We may see the total grow as high as $200 million, but I think we're sort of getting to the point of having some finality of having a total cost of the devastation that those tornadoes caused."

The state's last tally of insurance claims had put damage near $140 million.
