More West Nile Virus Mosquitoes Found In Greater Boston

Last week the mosquitoes in West Roxbury tested positive for West Nile virus and now the virus has been found in Brookline and other parts of Boston.

So far this season, mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus were found along the Jamaica Plain line in Brookline, three areas of West Roxbury and in one location in Dorchester. No people have tested positive for the virus this year.

"Very few people who are infected even get any symptoms and those that get symptoms get very mild symptoms," Brookline Director of Public Health Dr. Alan Balsam said Friday. "It's only a very, very, very small percentage that get serious symptoms."

Dr. Balsam says the best thing that people can do to prevent infection is to wear mosquito repellent, make sure your window and door screens are tight and not ripped and that there is no water sitting around where insects could breed.
